What have you noticed changing in fast food over the years?

The type/preparation of the food, what they served, etc.

The more details, the better!


I think the biggest change I've noticed, is the taste of french fries now.

I know that deep french fried potatoes aren't good for anyone. But on

the very rare occasion I eat them with a burger, I really miss the flavor

I used to enjoy. I used to prefer Mc D's fries to any other fast food. But

when they joined the others with using the healthier oil, there went the

flavor for fries there also. I would probably have to go to a privately

owned fast food, to get original flavor these days. But they are hard to

find. The chains are everywhere and usually within two blocks of

each other.

I also miss the burgers that were so large, it took two hands to hold

one. My husband, loved a "Big Buford" in Phoenix. They were way too much for me to eat. My favorite then, was the "What a Burger", that are known in some of the southern states, including Arizona. But when their 'packing's became skimpier, we switched to "Jack In The Box". Now they too are a disappointment. And "Burger King", tastes like plastic food. I can't think of the name of the Mormon owned fast food chain. But it gets' tiresome when they put bread and butter pickles on a burger, and it screams for dills' instead, that you've

asked for. And nowhere do you get the packed burgers you see on your TV screens, for any burger that I've seen in person.

I have eaten a Jr Burger from "Wendy's" and enjoyed the BLT toppings..But it takes two of those to get satisfied, since they are small. But I don't like their bland fries. There is a local chain, called "Burgerville", where we live, that still has a 50's style burger. And they enforce that fact, with a decor that is 50's Rock and Roll, and even has a hot rod parked inside a few of them, all polished to car show appearance. All they need are car hops and it would truly be a 50's style burger joint.

We rarely eat at a Taco Bell, since they have been skimpy on the

toppings or fillings for years. And some of their locations have added

a spicey agenda. Which I don't appreciate, and often can't eat. We

used to enjoy a "Der Weinersnitzel" when we could find one. But I

haven't found one in our city or others near us, in many years. I used

to love their basic chili dog. I have eaten at the "In and Out " burgers'

in the LA area when we visited. And really enjoyed them for their

flavor about thirteen years ago. They aren't available in the northwest

yet. But maybe one day.

Yeah, the biggest one is the question I have about fast food Mexican food. How can they mess up on basics like a bean tortilla, quesadillas, fried rice, refried beans, chile rellenos, & sopapillas? I've had many, many wonderful versions of these, but sometimes the cooking is dreadful.

Other than that, I don't eat fast food often, but sometimes I go to the deli in our neighborhood grocery store or I buy something frozen or in a plastic container at Trader Joe's. However, all of it has a high sodium content & high fat content that are noticeable.

Even though it may look like it's healthy food, such as pasta or grilled veggies or potato pancakes or vegetarian soup or focaccio with jalapenos, etc. it tastes too salty. When I asked the grocery about the grilled veggies, the guy behind the counter said it was cooked in butter. When I cook some of this stuff, I use low-fat milk for the white sauce, clarified butter or sesame oil for the fat, & no added salt, but instead, some sort of herbs like rosemary or tarragon. I would never use mushrooms or onion or garlic, but all the chefs in California like tons of those things, which I would skip.

With some deli things, I could use bigger servings, but all of that stuff is expensive. I should be glad to have just small amounts since it is so high-sodium & high-fat. As for the taste, I'm sure it's a matter of what you usually eat & enjoy. Some is great, & some is not, & it definitely could be healthier.

There's a lot more of it. When I drive into the city there's fast food everywhere and there's a lot more variety--everything from burgers to fish and tacos to roasted chickens.

The one thing I don't like about it much is that many sit down restaurants might as well call themselves fast food. The service is usually good but the food is mediocre--examples might be Applebee's, Olive Garden or those Furr's Cafeterias. It looks and tastes the same everywhere you go.

I avoid those places.

Less people are eating fast food in the UK than they were ten years ago. People are getting more health conscious now. I know the big US fast food chains; McDonald's, Burger King, KFC etc are now offering salads, vegetarian, low-fat, low-salt and healthy eating options that were unheard of ten years ago.

In terms of service, fast food has changed drastically. Operations have focused on fast as possible food. Lean production and just in time service is the epitome of fast food chains. People want their food with no queuing times nowadays. We don't even have time to park, walk inside and order it seems. McDonald's introduced their first drive through in 1975 and now 95% of McDonald's chains have a drive through service.

The last time I ate at a Long John Silver's the fish portions were about half of what they were a few months before, the fish had been kept warm too long and was not cooked fresh, haven't been back and that was a year or so ago, a total waste of money. I bought a pizza at pizza chain a few years ago, they were running a special and there were waiting customers. The pizza was mostly tomato sauce for toppings, got heartburn and never went back. I make my own now and they are good. They put a special at those type of restaurants to get people in the door, then use the cheapest or smallest portions of foods. One bad experience is all it takes for me never to be their customer again. I rarely eat in any restaurant these days.

No communication skills are necessary in holding down a position in a drive-thru lane apparently , as it's like going for potluck. It used to be that one didn't need to double check the order at the pick up window;but I have learned if I really want it my way - I need to double-check it. The quality is lacking as well. Don't get me started on cleanliness of the help or the establishment. These are just a few of the resons I shy away from from fast food, other than I'm not shopping for a heart attack.

that it is prepared in a more efficient way, the food is prepared in a more organized way and is of somewhat better quality, more variety on the menu, faster service, made to order instead of just sitting there, better sanitation procedures. nutrition information available, improvements in customer service and management, faster service. they now offer benefits to employees and health insurance that is affordable. hope this helps.

I so seldom eat fast food that places have opened and closed and I never ate their food. The one thing that I see has changed is that there are so many fast food places. So many choices so little time. When we travel south and east we eat at Cracker Barrel. When we travel west we take a picnic lunch. I like Steak and Shake burgers and chili. That's all.

Its introduction. There was no such thing for the early part of my life, there wasn't even a fish and chip shop as I lived in a village.Personally I think it has been responsible for so many of the problems we have today, particularly obesity and the lack of family life, the whole family coming together at meal times and all that went with that.. The lack of any sort of table manners, the use of fingers instead of cutlery, Oh I could go on...but I won't!

There was no Oriental fast food when I was young.

All we had in Scotland was the "Chip Shop" which only sold deep fried fish and chips (only 1 type of fish too !).

They are still a favourite but have diversified and added chicken, black pudding, sausage, Scotch pie, several types of fish, all deep fried.

And the latest fad, deep fried MARS BARS !!!!!! yuck.

Yea, it's faster and less appetizing. Another thing I have found is when you go into a restaurant they serve you twice as much as a normal person should eat. No wonder the country is so over wait! Your parents teach you to eat every thing on your plate and not waist food and restaurants serve you a whole days supply in one setting! Sorry, I got carried away and that real wasn't what you were asking.

When I was quite young there were no fast food restaurants. There was a place that sold a huge loaf of french bread that had fried chicken inside it when you opened the 'lid'.

Fast food to us was eating a mom-made picnic meal at a roadside park while we were traveling. Mother heated the baby's bottle on the car radiator.

When the grandsons came along they loved to be taken to McDonalds for a meal.

I find most all hamburgers tasteless and not hot. My theory is that the fat in them created the good taste, then they started using lean meat.We use to get burgers at a bowling alley that dipped their buns in butter...Yummm.

If I want fast food I go to a Chinese carry out. The food is cheap and lots of it.

They stopped frying in lard and are using a better quality of oil, but the fries are all processed potatoes instead of real potatoes.

The burger places are using leaner meat, not as much fat/grissle.

We have a better selection than we had 10 to 20 years ago.

Instead of just KFC, we have Church's, Pollo Loco, Popeyes, Hartz and some others.

I remember the time when Colonel Dixie, Burger Chef and McDonalds were the 3 major burger places. And Stone's ice cream parlor was the big thing in town. But that was the 1960s.

I think they are still using far too much processed and over-processed foods, but it is nice to see Wendys is offering Mandarin Oranges as well and Apples have come to McDonalds.

A lot of good, healthy choices, more customer service but also bad, bad bad... they've bowed to public pressure and assumed we all eat 3 meals a day there and have ruined the taste of the fries by changing the type of oil. When I eat out I want tasty treat, not bland.

Ashley - when I was a kid (in Britain) fast food was limited to fish and chips and pork pies! I enjoyed the fish and chips - always hot and tasty, but had no appetite for the pies. This is all I have to compare to today's fast food!

Their portions are smaller....the big mac is now an overly sauced and topped burger. The chains all seem to taste the same. Arby's now has a better tasting burger....egads! They all over salt, too.

Now I wonder why the big mac was my favorite food during pregnancies. Why I ever loved the egg mc muffing. Why Sonic dogs were special. Where did the 'taste' go?

Now when I want fast food, I go for Chinese. No more disappointments for me; I'll keep my memories.

I remember, in the 70's- a Whopper was Huge, but now it's regular size, and I used to go to a drive thru, that used to serve a pizza burger, it was so good- had Mozzarella cheese hid in the middle of the beef patty- but that place closed down.

There's some effort to make it healthier, - salads at McDonald's, etc. Unfortunately, if they don't sell, then they go back to the triple cheeseburgers!

It's probably less Family oriented,because They seem to target Younger People. I thank it,s better for You though. McDonald's offers Healtry choices for Their Kids Meals.

Seems like fast food restaurants are offering more healthful foods. A co-worker came back from McDonald's with a bag of apple slices. I was impressed!

Last year when I could afford a Big Mac or a Burger King meal, I am noticing that the food does not taste as good as it once did.

The variety and the price. Some places are getting a healtier focus and I think it would be best if all menus contained the calories.

The service is terrible. Its mostly young people that they hire. The food is usually cold... or the order is wrong.*

I don't like the french fries anymore - they taste lousy - they have ruined them with what ever oil they are now using.

Seldom go to them We prefer China Buffets usually Hong KongBuffet while traveling or a Cracker Barrel.

The size of the fries and drinks. THe burgers are the same. I love Big Macs.

Larger serving sizes, higher cholesterol.

What is a food you like, but you find yourself removing one or two things out of it before eating it?

For example, I like Runts candy, but I can't stand the bananas, so I always have to remove them.

What is the food, and what do you take out before eating it?


I do the same thing, I hate banana flavored candy. I do not eat peanuts in chex mix, or bar mixes

Usually burgers ( from Burger King, Hardeez.etc), all though when i order, i say not to give that, this,,,,but if i forget , no tomatoes and mayonnaise! At all, i can't eat this two ever!

When I make salmon patties I buy the Alaskan salmon and I take out the skin and the bones.Some people eat that but I think it is gross.

i only like dark green pieces, i always have to remove the white pieces and hearts before i can eat it.

Chicken Pot Pie. I always remove the peas because I absolutely hate peas

I have to pick the hard boiled egg whites out of potato salad.

When I eat stew, I try to get more veggies & less meat.

I like pasta salad and pizza but I pick the olives out if there are any in there.

I absolutely love to eat Honey Garlic ribs.. but I always find myself removing rib bones from the meat ; ) lol

tacos, i take out tomatoes and half the lettuce, and sour cream if its in it.

Salad for me too, I have to take out the purple leaves *ew* and the tomatoes

What Food should I change my kittens to?

My Kittens are 7-8 months old and are having problems with diahera due to changing the food too rapidly and the vet gave me some medicine and told me to gradually change to a better quality food. But what kind? Innova EVO, Wellness Core, Athurity, Nature's Variety Instincts I heard are really great quality.


Okay, no, Science Diet, Iams, Purina and all of those are not great foods. They are BETTER than Meow Mix, Whiskas and other Wal-mart brands, but they are still terrible foods. They don't have enough meat content for cats, who are obligate carnivores, and contain a lot of disgusting fillers that cats can't digest.

Do not be lulled into a false sense of safety just because someone is a vet or becoming one. Vets are not nutritionists and don't always recommend the best foods. That's why many keep Hill's prescription diets handy in their clinics.

You have heard correctly. Innova EVO, Wellness or Wellness Core and Authority are very good foods. EVO and Core are grain free and based on a diet that more closely resembles what cats would be eating in the wild. All of the really good foods are more expensive, but you'll actually be spending the same or even saving money in the long run. Cats are getting more nutrients in a smaller amount of food in great foods than they are in bad foods, hence they have to eat more of the bad to get what they need. If you feed your pets good foods, they will eat less but get more of what they need. Added bonus: less litterbox cleanup for you!

What I recommend is to feed your cats the best food you can personally afford. If you can't afford Innova Evo, but you can afford Natural Balance, then that's perfectly fine.

What were you feeding before?

Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, and Purina One or Pro Plan are all excellent foods, and much less expensive than the ones you listed. The ones you listed are fine too as long as you don't mind paying the premium.

The brands like Meow Mix, Whiskas, etc., are fine for many cats but can cause loose stools in some cats because of the high corn content.

Of course some people will tell you that the major brands are horrible, but you've got to expect that with all the opinions flying around the internet. ;)

Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.

Adults enjoy a special banana beer called mbege made in the Kilimanjaro region (northeast Tanzania). What food smells the worst when burned?

I just burned an onion bagel and it smells pretty bad in here. What have you burned that left a horrid tingle in your nostrils?

I'm great at burning stuff right onto the bottom of the pan really badly, the kitchen ends up smelling of charcoal! Now that is the smell of panic!

Definately popcorn. The smells just doesnt go away for a while either. Ugh!

Food product directives are a set of rules by which all food manufacturers must stick to. They govern such things as the amount of salt allowed in food, or which artificial additives are safe to use.

What is the weirdest and most disgusting food you have eaten?

the weirdest food i have eaten is rabbit soup. ughhh!

also alligator or some sort of croc.


I traveled to many third world countries when I was in the USMC. I've eaten many wierd and disgusting things. You never know if you will like it or not. Plus it's kinda fun. It's like a dare.

By far, the most disgusting thing that I've eaten was balut. Balut is a an egg in which the bird begins to grow.

In Malaya in the Army we used to put a paraffin lamp out at night and all the moths and insects that burnt themselves to death on it fell onto a tapaulin underneath. There would be a bucket-full by morning. Into hot oil for a few seconds to fry them crisp,and they were our breakfast 'cornflakes' with re-constituted dried milk. Helped out with the protein ration. Very nice..Sometimes we had them with curry paste to spread on biscuits.....I grew up on rabbit soup,boiled rabbit,roast rabbit,rabbit stew,rabbit pie,rabbit everything......we used to trap them. We only got other meat for birthdays and Christmas,when we traded veg from our garden for chickens. We got all our eggs that way too. Now we can get chicken every day.....it's luxury these days.

tripe, beef tongue, snails, frogs legs, and chocolate covered bugs of some sort. I liked everything but the tripe.

rabit soup is good, would love to try alligator..ive had octopus stew...its ****** amazing, i wish i was eating some right now

Weirdest food I've eaten is "Ba Lut" eats a chicken/duck egg with the fetus inside. It's a Asian dish.

What food should I have to become fatter and more muscular?

I'm 16 and I have extremely skinny even anorexic forearms. My biceps, abs and legs are pretty muscular and I've tried eating a lot of food but I don't gain weight because of my metabolism and because I play a lot of basketball. I only weigh 53kg at my age which is abnormal and far too low. Any diet tips to gain weight especially on my forearms and exercises? BTW wrist curls don't help. They seem to make my forearms smaller.


Ok, in order to bulk up you need to lift weights that are roughly 70 - 75% of your 1 rep max (the max weight you can perform one correct rep of on any given exercise). Basically you need to lift a weight that you can lift 8 - 10 reps of (with correct form) and hit failure on the last rep (you cannot complete 1 more rep). You need to build up to to about 4 - 5 sets of this for each exercise. This form of lifting is called hypertrophy, i.e. bodybuilding. In conjunction with this you also need to increase your daily calorie intake by about 500 calories per day, ensuring that you consume protein within the 10 minutes after you train, and also every 2 - 3 hours throughout the day (egg whites, chicken, tuna, lean red meat). A protein supplement is the best way of taking in these extra calories and protein. You will also need to ensure that you are consuming enough complex carbs (fruit, veg, etc) to provide you with the fulw for your workouts.

If the wrist curls are making your forearms smaller then I am guessing that you are over training. You need to give your body at least 48 hours rest after lifting weights. This is the minimum. Anything less than that and you are over-training which will only cause the muscle to break down and wear away. I would suggest that you pick different muscle groups and work them on alternative days, chest and triceps one day, biceps, forearms and back another day, legs and shoulders another day. This will allow you to lift weights everyday if you wish, whilts giving the various muscle groups time to recover.

Another fun way to build your forearms is the NSD Powerball (check it out on the net). I play basketbal too. I got one a couple of weeks ago and i'm noticing an increase in strength in my forearms.
